Change Your Future!

Are you 16 or 17 years-old? Don't miss your chance to do NCS this Autumn half term! You'll live away from home, develop skills to boost your CV, and meet amazing people you'll never forget.

More than 275,000 young people have already said YES to NCS.

National Citizen Service provides programmes across the UK during school holidays, offering 16 and 17 year olds the chance to learn life skills whilst meeting new friends and having an adventure. The unique programme involves a residential stay, helps participants build skills for work and life, as well as contributing to the local community via a community project designed by the teens themselves.

Annabel Stalley from Bournemouth shares her experience..

Taking part in NCS has led to 17-year-old Annabel from Bournemouth making huge strides in her self-confidence. A year on from the programme and she is still seeing the benefits – the self-assureds she gained putting her in a great place preparing for her A levels and beyond.

I’d had the thought about going on NCS in the back of my mind for a few years so when NCS presented at our school, I knew I had to sign up. I was a bit nervous so I made my friend sign up with me but I definitely shouldn’t have been, I met some awesome people.

NCS has been a genuine game changer for me, I can’t express the change in self-confidence I have experienced. My family couldn’t quite believe it, I went away for four weeks and came back a much more self-assured version of myself!

I had such a good experience at NCS and I’ve tried to be involved with it at every opportunity since; I ended up being part of NCS leaders and I even got to go to Belgium and be a part of the regional Youth Board. I even got to be a part of the National Youth Board to represent Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, and I absolutely loved taking part on behalf of my home region. I feel like it has opened up so many doors for me, especially the NCS leader’s course. With this extra time we took the skills we had gained on the summer course and really refined them, and by the end of the week I was speaking in front of a crowd of 200, which would have felt impossible before.

I think the absolute highlight for me was the social action projects, especially the one we thought up called “Project Backpack”. Because of the work we did, we got essential items to 50 vulnerable and homeless people in our local area – that felt really special.

Annabel’s mum also offers a positive opinion of the programme: “Since becoming part of NCS I have not only watched Annabel's self-confidence grow but also her confidence to say 'yes' to new challenges and experiences. NCS has provided Annabel with the opportunity to take part in once in a life time events such as the World War 1 centenary in Belgium earlier this year. Here she represented the youth of the United Kingdom and even met the Royal Family. By being part of NCS, becoming a leader and their representative on the National Youth Board she has been able to develop team working, public speaking and project managing skills and these are relevant and transferable strengths that will stay with her as she continues in life.”

Research also shows that teens that take part in NCS are significantly more likely to get into university and teens that take part in NCS also report greater confidence in their ability to get a job. Visit www.ncsyes.co.uk for details of how to sign up for the Autumn programme.
