The Full Monty Review

The stage adaptation of The Full Monty is everything it should be! I had my reservations before the show began, The film with a small $3.5 million budget went on to gross over $250 million, critical and commercial success combined with a string of awards ensured the film became a classic loved by everyone worldwide. How would a stage production going to capture the magic that made the film such a success?

Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar- and BAFTA-winning writer of the film, has adapted his own screenplay for this hilarious and heartfelt stage production, which features the iconic songs from the film by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones.

The tour features as cast of household names including Gary Lucy, Anthony Lewis, Andrew Dunn, Louis Emerick, Chris Fountain and Kai Owen. Also featured in the play are Andrew Ashford, Adam Beresford, Pauline Fleming, William Ilkley, Jonathan McGarrity, Charlotte Powell, Jess Schofield and Fiona Skinner.

The cast clearly had a great chemistry and any previous roles you may have seen the cast playing before are instantly forgotten. Gary Lucy was outstanding as Gaz and his stage relationship with his onstage son was as heart felt and warm as it was in the film. Dave was played by Kai Owen hilariously and couldn’t have been further from his Hollyoaks character the evil Pete Buchanan further proving his diversity as an actor. The girls also added plenty of comedy mixed into the heart felt story line.

The production itself is incredibly well put together with sound, lighting and set all working so well together to bring the magic we all remember to life on the stage. The Stage show contains all the classic scenes we know and love from the film as well as enough new material to allow the stage production to stand out in its own right. A stela cast, a story line we all know and love, the perfect amount of comedy and tackling all the issues that make you feel for all the characters. If you know and enjoyed the film the stage production is a must see; if you’re a theatre fan or not you will love The Full Monty!

For those of you wondering, yes they do go The Full Monty, as the lads rip off the thongs a perfectly timed explosion of light and pyrotechnics closes the show leaving the rest down to your imagination!

The Full Monty UK Tour is directed by Jack Ryder, design by Robert Jones, choreography by Ian West, lighting by Tim Lutkin, and sound by Sarah Weltman.
