The ‘Sound of music’ Review

Produced by Bill Kenwright, directed by Martin Conner and Choreographed by Bill Deamer.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ‘Film’ this fantastic stage version, with lavish stage props and effects, was a pleasure to watch. I was raised watching the original film, and I can honestly say I was not disappointed in the least with this version. Staring Lucy O’Byme the runner up on The Voice 2015 as Maria and Andrew Lancel from Coronation street as Captain Von Trapp.

The show starts with the amazing vocal choir of the nun’s from the Abbey, and notably Jan Hartley as Mother Abbess, who’s later rendition of ‘Climb every Mountain’ is absolutely stunning, leaving you with ‘goose bumps!’

Lucy O’Byme’s voice has ‘Julie Andrews’ written all over it, she is an amazing singer, who captures the role perfectly. The children steal the show though, with their perfect portrayal of the seven motherless Von Trapp children, lead by Annie Holland as Liesl, who again plays the 16-year old’s character perfectly, especially when she sings, ‘Sixteen going on Seventeen’ to actor Kane Verrall’s ‘Rolf’ the telegram boy. The part of Max Detweiler played by Duncan Smith was played sung and danced very well.

The first half was just over an hour long, and included all the classics including ‘My favourite things’ ‘Do-Re-Mi’ ‘So long Farewell’ and left you ready for more!

The second half, featured a beautiful rendition by Andrew Lancel of ‘Edelweiss’ and was a triumph of an ending, with a standing ovation by an almost sold out audience. If you get the chance to go and see this classic musical, I recommend you do so!

The Sound Of Music is on at Pavilion Bournemouth until Saturday 20th August, then continues its year long tour. Find out about future locations by clicking here.
