Heather Small

Heather Small – Live in Concert Review

Heather Small: Live in Concert took place at the Regent Centre in Christchurch on Monday 14th March.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our seats in the main auditorium where there was a great buzz in the air. The evening started with a strong support performance; Chris Bannister, guitar singer from Preston, wowed the audience with a collection of his own songs from albums such as ‘Colours’ and ‘Don’t Forget, Forgive’ and covers in his own unique, country acoustic style; his version of ‘Annies Song’ originally performed by John Denver received a particularly impressed reception from the audience.

After a short interval the audience excitedly re seated and it wasn’t long before Heather Small graced the stage with the perfect opening number, ‘One Night In Heaven’. Heather did not just look the part with her huge red hair and stunning denim cat suit; she also hit every vocal with utmost perfection and completely owned every corner of the stage with her slick and sassy dancing. Her opening number filled the room with energy and got the audience going, so much so that it wasn’t long before an excited member at the front was politely told to sit down! Heather made it quite clear that she “came here to dance!” and by the second number that’s exactly what we were up from our seats doing!

Throughout the evening top hits from both Heathers solo material and from the M People such as ‘Search For The Hero’, ‘Sight For Sore Eyes’ and of course ‘Proud’, were expertly performed and she fully engaged with the audience throughout. We were also pleasantly surprised with a range of covers from some of music’s leading artists, starting with one of her biggest influencers Elkie Brooks who I’m sure would have been amazed at her version of ‘Pearl’s a Singer’ followed by brilliant performances of Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’, an Amy Whinehouse version of ‘Valerie’ and Whitney Houston’s ‘Dance With Somebody’. Each track was strongly complimented by her band and two energetic backing vocalists who sounded great and the evening concluded with a two song encore, finishing with her feisty, feel good dance track ‘Moving On Up’.

Overall Heather Small: Live in Concert at the Regent Centre in Christchurch was a night filled with top hits, amazing musical performance’s, laughter and lots of dancing! Ten out of ten!
