Cinderella Review

One of the best things about Christmas in my opinion is a night at the Panto and when I heard this years pantomime at the Bournemouth Pavilion would be Cinderella I couldn’t wait!

The auditorium was filled with the laughter and excitement of children (and adults!) before the show began and as we were told to take our seats a medley of music filled the room. The Panto was opened by the Fairy Godmother (Melanie Walters who plays Gwen in Gavin and Stacey), who set the standard for the rest of what was an extremely professional performance.

Cinderella was played by Dani Harmer (Tracy Beaker and Strictly Come Dancing) who gave a stunning performance, her Prince Charming was Rhydian (X factor) and the pair captivated the audience with their on stage romance and a number of song and dance performances, which included popular hits and a few Panto originals! Noel Brodie also joined the star-studded cast and gave a brilliantly hilarious performance as Buttons and the Ugly Stepsisters (David Ball and Michael Chance) had the room in stitches with their excellent banter, audience interaction and the famous panto ‘It’s behind you’ ghost scene where they were accompanied by Baron Hardup, played by David Alcock!

Students from Bournemouth’s Stage Door School of Dance and Drama were brilliantly choreographed and provided constant support to the lead characters, including a lovely David Bowie number with the Fairy Godmother and a chorus of little fairies! The sparkling stage set was extremely impressive, particularly during the ‘Cinderella will go to the ball!’ scene which saw a giant pumpkin change into a coach on stage accompanied by two Shetland Ponies, although I wasn’t too sure they appreciated the loud music, and lighting as much as the audience might have appreciated their presence (bring back the traditional panto horse!).

All in all it was a fun packed festive evening filled with plenty of song, dance, laughter and eye watering panto banter- not to mention the impressively quick costume changes! Go along with family and friends for a real festive treat!
