New Year, New You? How to get fit this February!

Do you want to go from couch to 5k, spin-a-day or maybe swim the length of the channel whilst raising money for a good cause? Individuals are encouraged to take part in Dorset Blind Associations fitness challenge this February.

Is your New Years resolution to get fit and lose weight? Dorset Blind Association are running their Fitness February Campaign, now in its 3rd year, which aims to encourage individuals to get fit, lose weight and raise funds for vital services for visually impaired people in Dorset. Participants can get involved in this campaign by getting sponsored to take on a fitness challenge this February in the most creative way they can.

Last year, one participant from LV decided to swim the equivalent length of the channel, a total of 35,000 metres! Greg Ellis, 2016 Participant said, “Getting up at 6:00am every morning to go swimming before work was extremely challenging, but receiving the support I did gave me a huge amount of motivation and really encouraged me to get fit and do something good for charity, my company even match funded my efforts! ”

In previous years the charity's CEO, Jonathan Holyhead, took on the Spin-a-day fitness challenge, attending a spinning class at New Milton Leisure Centre everyday, totaling 29 classes last year! These are but a few creative challenge ideas that participants can take on in 2017.

Leah Cross, Community Support Worker at Dorset Blind, will be taking on the challenge this year and has decided to walk the height of the Empire State Building, a total of 1576 steps. Not just once, but everyday!

Leah said “I think Fitness February is a great chance for anyone to take up exercise, whether you’re into fitness or not. I want to take on a challenge that I have never done before. I know how important the need for Dorset Blind Association is as I see it first hand.”

Inspired by Leah, members and volunteers at Dorset Blind Association are setting out their fitness plans with a wide variety of activities including; couch to 5k, train for a Tough Mudder, or simply just carry out 30 minutes of exercise everyday. The charity are encouraging members of the public to join the fitness challenge with their own creative ideas.

Are you part of a fitness club; Zumba, spinning, tennis etc? You don’t have to take on the challenge on your own, get a group together and organise a Fitness-athon Day and raise money whilst having fun!

Last year,  that challenge raised over £1800 with 43 participants from all over the world, as far as Australia. The amount raised is sufficient to support 5 visually impaired people for a whole year through the different services that the charity offers.

Dorset Blind Association provides various services and practical help for blind and partially sighted people across the whole of Dorset where there are more than 30,000 people with sight loss. This number is predicted to increase every year and will reach 35,000 in 2020. This will cause an increase in demand for the charities services and support.
