Mother and NHS Worker Fights for Hepatitis C Awareness

“I chose to take drugs, but I didn’t chose the years of addiction or to get hep C."

NHS worker and mother, Louise, has made an impassioned call for people living with hepatitis C to be afforded respect and dignity, no matter how they caught the disease. Louise’s message features in a short film produced as part of the I’m Worth… campaign which calls on the general public, health service providers, policymakers and media to do their part to combat stigma, so that advances in hepatitis C care translates into a better future for patients.

“I’m worth being treated with respect and dignity” – people living with hepatitis C highlight the need to break down stigma associated with the condition.

Take a look at Louise’s film to find out more about her experience with hepatitis C, from how she contracted the virus to her journey to being hep C free.

Alongside Louise’s film is information about living with hepatitis C and a series of short video messages from other people who have been diagnosed with the condition. Now hepatitis C free, Louise is all too familiar with the stigma faced by many living with the condition, “I was shocked by people’s attitude to the disease when I was diagnosed, there’s a feeling that people who have it ‘got what they deserve’, which can be really damaging,” Louise said.
