Healthwatch Dorset & AUB Event

Healthwatch Dorset, have held a free interactive family art event, in association with the Arts University Bournemouth, to explore family opinions of local health and care services.

Health and care consumer champions, Healthwatch Dorset, have worked with Creative Events Management Students at the Arts University Bournemouth to produce ‘Your Say, Your Way’ – a fun, creative day of workshops and activities which took place during the February half term for children age 5+ and their parents.

Hosted at Creative Kids Art Education Charity in Sovereign Shopping Centre, Boscombe the event aimed to encourage children to explore their creative minds with Healthwatch Dorset (the independent local watchdog for health and care services) to express how they feel about health, care and wellbeing. There were creative writing stations, arts and crafts, puppet making and a puppet show. The feedback and responses received from both children and parents was positive.

Young Person Engagement Officer for Healthwatch Dorset, Emilia Chase, said:

“Overall the general feedback from the children who visited either a GP, hospital, school nurse or a dentist in the Bournemouth area was that although to begin with they were quite frightened, the health professionals were extremely friendly and comforting.

This is encouraging to hear and demonstrates that health professionals are providing young children with a predominantly positive experience when it comes to health and social care.”

One young child, aged five, at the event said:

“When I feel sick at school I visit the school nurse, she gives me a teddy bear and she talks to me and makes me feel better.”

Healthwatch gives people a powerful voice locally and nationally. At a local level, Healthwatch Dorset works to help local people get the best out of their local health and social care services. Healthwatch Dorset frequently attend and host events to collect the vital opinions of local people on health and social care to influence the future of these services.
