Just how evolved are we really?

Since the development of the first primates 100 million years ago, we have come a long way in both our physical and cognitive abilities and development. However, with the advancement of technology our physical state has rapidly deteriorated and continues to worsen – in fact, we are going backwards.

We move less and eat the same amount or more which leads to weight issues. We no longer need to get up to change channels on the TV or walk to the shop for supplies. Everything is available to us at the touch of a button. While this is great news for technology companies, it’s bad news for the human form.

Our upright posture was never designed to sit in chairs, and it was certainly not designed to sit for long periods bent forwards from the mid (thoracic) spine. This position puts maximal pressure on the lower back (lumbar spine) and the lower neck (cervical spine) and causes the thoracic spine to become fixed and mega-stiff and the lower cervical and lower lumbar spines to become unstable. This, along with repetitive movements, are the main reasons people suffer spinal pain.

The terminology may be incorrect in that well-known song, but anatomically it is very true. We are joined together in what’s called a kinematic chain. Kinematics is a term used to describe how objects move in relation to one another.

When it comes to our bodies, how we plant a foot on the floor influences how we move the rest of our leg, pelvis and spine. So for example, if you have suffered an ankle injury (one you may have even forgotten about) and you have a recurring back problem, it may be that your ankle needs to be treated in order for your back to work properly. The same is true for other joints such as knees, hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders and neck.


Gardening shouldn't be a pain!

We know that many of our patients are keen gardeners, and what with the recent good weather we thought we'd share some tips for pain-free gardening.

1. Get down on one knee, rather than kneeling on both or bending while standing. This forces you to bend from the hip rather than the spine, helps you utilise the big spinal support muscles (buttocks/ hamstrings/ quadriceps), and makes it easier to get up.

2. Change jobs. Rather than doing the same job all day, do half an hour or an hour of each. This means many more changes of position and a much happier spine.

1. Musical chairs. Swapping your usual office chair for an exercise ball or putting a wobble cushion on your chair for even part of the day forces you to engage your core muscles and pay more attention to your posture.

2. Sit less, walk more. Walking is great for your back. It’s a really gentle way of mobilising your spine and will usually help to loosen off any minor niggles. Go out for a walk in your lunch break or make sure you get out for a nice stroll at the weekends.

Rachael Potter (32), is a swimming coach and the owner of Bubbles Swim School and is a competitive swimmer in Dorset and represents GB masters. She was 1st for the 1500m main event for her age group in the master and 2nd in GB master for 400m and 800m. Her open water event pier to pier 1.4 miles she completed in 27 minutes and came 7th overall. Rachael is due to compete end of this year.
