Me-Mo: The History of a Great Little Company

Eight years down the road and with over 20,000 happy customers under our (fan) belts, Me-Mo (short for Me-Motor) is a thriving little company with big ambitions.

I always say ‘we’ and ‘our’ when referring to the company, still keeping the vision alive that I had almost 9 years ago: to create a woman-friendly motoring related brand that offers a fun and viable alternative to many of the mainstream outlets, often fronted by a grease-monkey mentality.

Me-Mo offers funky and fabulous kit for your motor: from colourful and practical car seat covers and steering wheel covers (made by my lovely seamstresses in the UK), to car organisers and car flowers and vases and a host of other motoring related products. If, like me, you have always dreaded making the trip to Halfords, I had high hopes that I could create an online resource that might in some part, deem that particular trip unnecessary.

Coasting through a recession, coping with the fall-out from one son’s autism and another’s diagnosis of chronic disease syndrome, losing our family home (due to a very clumsy husband) and now living with, and caring for, my mother with Alzheimers, it has not been the smoothest of rides.

But I’d like to think that I’ve held a pretty strong grip on the steering wheel. I still ultimately would love to see a fleet of Me-Mo branded cars dotted around the country, transporting our lovely accessories from our depots.

Saying ‘we’ when referring to the company has, I’ve decided, some deep seated psychological roots. I’ve never felt particularly precious about the brand. I have always felt it to be a brand to be owned by and shared with all women. With that ultimate aim, I (we) are approaching crowd funding platforms to try and get some investment to turn our great little company into a great big company.

We have a new web site going live very soon and it would be fabulous to be able to promote it well. I’d also like to create a more diverse range of protective car seat covers for surfers and animal lovers, and also have plans for seat cover fabric that mitigates carbon emissions.

To start this journey, I’ve been encouraged to take the first step with a web site called Startjoin. I have been told that the aim of this is to illustrate the base level of support (we do have over 1500 likes on Facebook, reached in just over two weeks) and any investment, at this stage, offers ‘rewards’ rather than equity. At the very least, I would love it if you could also ‘like’ our Facebook page. If you do feel that you can invest any amount of money to show your support (even £2!) that would be absolutely fantastic. Similarly, if you feel you have any particular skills that you feel may help; we’d love to hear from you!

The next stage will be to take the company to a larger crowd funding platform, where equity, in return for investment, will be offered. I would love to think we can all pull together and Big Up Me-Mo.
