floods in wessex

What does the future hold for flood victims across the UK?

Flood issues have swept the nation for the last five months, plunging the country into chaos. As people fight to protect their assets and decontaminate their homes from dirty floodwaters, the nation has rallied together to raise funds.

Charities such as Flood Wings, The Red Cross and have raised thousands of pounds in funds that have been distributed throughout the UK to flood victims.

Some of the worst effected areas are Somerset and South West Dorset. Residents feel stranded as they continue to battle the floodwaters that do not appear to be reseeding. The majority of victims are only armed with sandbags and brooms that have been used to sweep surface water from homes.

Losing your mobile phone...

What should you be more worried about…losing your mobile phone or being abducted by aliens?

Looking at some of the obscure insurance policies taken out with Lloyd’s of London, it is surprising to discover that only 20% of mobile phone owners insure their handsets, an everyday gadget that most people heavily rely upon. (Source. ONS. January 2014)

Budget Mobile Cover, the specialist mobile phone insurer suggests that with mobile phones becoming increasingly expensive, cover for your mobile technology is a sensible way to protect against a costly and inconvenient loss, theft, breakdown and accidental damage.

Navitus Bay scales back proposed wind park

Navitus Bay Development Ltd has today announced that it will scale back the proposed wind park in order to reduce its visual impact.

In response to feedback received from the public and statutory consultees during the final round of consultation last year, the developer will remove the northernmost part of the development – the ‘top triangle’ – which will move the site up to 3.8km further away from the shore.

This latest change, when combined with the previous scaling back of the site in December 2012, will significantly reduce the visual impact of the development from all viewpoints along the coast in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, whilst ensuring that the project continues to make an important contribution to sustainable energy generation in the UK and to the local economy in the shape of jobs and investment.

The Regent Centre appoints Greg Rawlings as Manager

The Regent is the centre for the arts, entertainment, cinema and the community in Christchurch whilst also serving audiences in East Dorset, the New Forest and beyond.

The Board of Directors of the Regent Centre are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Manager, Greg Rawlings, who has grown up in the area and now lives in Ensbury Park.

Greg Rawlings comes from the LifeCentre in Winton near Bournemouth, where he oversaw the conversion of the former Moderne cinema into a multi-purpose conference centre. The Moderne, much like the Regent, was built in the 1930s as a 1,500 seater Super Cinema. It closed in the 1980s and again, just like the Regent, became a Bingo Hall. Today it is the LifeCentre multi-purpose conference centre and is an object lesson in architectural restoration with much of its white stucco interior and exterior designed to reflect its original glory days as an Art Deco palace of the silver screen. The project is an award worthy tribute to Greg and the team at the LifeCentre.
