TLC for the Regent

As a Grand old lady of 84 years of age, nobody would begrudge The Regent Centre in Christchurch of having a little TLC lavished on it from time to time.

Currently the cinema, theatre and arts centre that has faithfully served the entertainment needs of Christchurch and the surrounding area since it opened on Boxing Day 1931, is undergoing an exciting rolling programme of redecoration, repairs and refurbishment.

Regent patrons will have noticed a number of improvements in the Centre’s iconic Art Deco Auditorium, including the addition of an extra 38 seats, bringing the Regent’s seating capacity up to 484. 28 of the extra seats are in the Circle, where the Sound Desk was originally sited. There are also four extra wheelchair bays in the stalls. This extra seating capacity has been achieved by re-siting the Sound and Lighting Desks in to their own dedicated booths in the Stalls area. In addition, all of the remaining original seats have been upgraded with higher density foam inserts for greater comfort during shows.

Life Drive

Bournemouth Borough Council and LV=Streetwise, now part of the SafeWise charity, are leading the way in tackling road accidents amongst young drivers through the launch of a new scheme ‘Life Drive’. Building on the skills and experience already gained by young drivers, ‘Life Drive’ training is free and is designed to give young drivers who are most at risk of having an accident help and advice on how to avoid potential accidents.

‘Life Drive’ has been designed using the Graduated Driver Learning (GDL) approach used in America and Australia which has proven to reduce the number of road accidents. The scheme is being delivered by LV=Streetwise on behalf of the Council, as part of the Council’s efforts to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on Bournemouth roads by 40 per cent by 2020.

From one drummer to another…

In this interview, our very own Rowan Jackson interviews his drumming idol, UB40'S Jimmy Brown. Together they discuss the reggae genre, where the band has been, and the future that lies ahead...

Hi Jimmy, let me just introduce myself…

My name’s Rowan Jackson. I’ve been a professional drummer for years. Thank you for taking this opportunity to talk to me.

I use to play with Nine Below Zero, Bonnie Tyler, and other 80’s players back in the day, but I haven’t done it for years now.

You must have been a real player then, to play with those kinds of people?

I wasn’t too bad but I didn’t make my millions from it so I turned to teaching to give something back. I don’t play much now but I still love a bit of drums, love a bit of reggae as well, so it’s a dream come true talking to you!
