Poole Town seek new Vice Presidents to drive club forward

Poole Town FC is 125 years old this year having been formed on the 20th September 1890. Its success in recent years is the stuff most non-league teams only ever get to dream about. To continue the club’s incredible journey it is looking fir a group of individuals to form a new Vice-Presidents Board to be answerable to and work in conjunction with the main Board of Directors to build on the success achieved thus far, make sure it can be sustained and then to push the club forward to even bigger and better achievements.

The club needs new blood of the right caliber to bring new ideas, new initiatives, new finance, and new contacts. It is hoping to attract at least 10 like-minded people to inject £5000 apiece into the club in return for:

It’s Tea celebrate their one year anniversary!

I was recently invited to attend an anniversary party at It’s Tea on Ashley Road in Poole. I jumped at the chance to help this local tea specialist celebrate their first year as a company, and joined them at their shop to enjoy some quality tea, delicious cakes and lively conversation.

The Mayor was present at the event making it very special, and there were many happy customers and associates browsing the numerous varieties of teas that are available in store. Collectively, It’s Tea stock over 160 varieties of tea in addition to a selection of quality coffees and drinking chocolate. Whether you prefer fruit tea, herbal teas, spice enriched teas or infused teas, It’s Tea can suggest a tea for every palate, all you need to do is tell them what flavours and aromas you like!

Me-Mo: The History of a Great Little Company

Eight years down the road and with over 20,000 happy customers under our (fan) belts, Me-Mo (short for Me-Motor) is a thriving little company with big ambitions.

I always say ‘we’ and ‘our’ when referring to the company, still keeping the vision alive that I had almost 9 years ago: to create a woman-friendly motoring related brand that offers a fun and viable alternative to many of the mainstream outlets, often fronted by a grease-monkey mentality.

Me-Mo offers funky and fabulous kit for your motor: from colourful and practical car seat covers and steering wheel covers (made by my lovely seamstresses in the UK), to car organisers and car flowers and vases and a host of other motoring related products. If, like me, you have always dreaded making the trip to Halfords, I had high hopes that I could create an online resource that might in some part, deem that particular trip unnecessary.

Giant penguin to welcome feathered friends to the town

A penguin as tall as a single decker bus is set to pop up at Bournemouth locations in July, to celebrate the launch of the Oceanarium’s brand new penguin enclosure, opening in the school summer holidays.

Those who spot ‘Humbug’ the giant penguin and photograph themselves with him are asked to share their image on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #BournemouthPenguin for the chance to win a family of four 2015 Silver Membership, an invite to the VIP family launch and a penguin themed goodie bag.

Sara Kirchel, Oceanarium marketing and PR manager, said: “The colony of penguins is going to make a great addition to the Oceanarium and excitement has been building since we made the announcement. We want to add to this buzz and get people involved in our giant penguin hunt around Bournemouth. We hope everyone has their cameras at the ready and we look forward to seeing the photographs.”

Police launch a new app to tackle hate crime

Dorset Police has joined forces with the Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council to launch a pioneering app for iPhone and android smart phones to help victims of hate crime.

The app helps the most vulnerable members of society understand how to deal with the traumatic effect of such crimes, why it happens, how to report it and where to seek help and support.

As hate crime is thought to be widely under- reported, the app allows individuals to report instances in the privacy of their own safe environment.

Adnan Chaudry, Chief Executive of Dorset Race Equality Council, said: “I am delighted with this great initiative. We know that there is still under-reporting of hate crime in Dorset and this app will make it easier for people to report incidents easily and quickly.”

Encore! Review

I was told about this new company about six months ago and I must admit that my first thought was to wonder why we would need yet another theatre group in an area that is already bursting with them. However, having now watched their debut show I can see that they have filled a tiny gap in the market – and filled it rather well, as it happens.

That gap has come about because as far as I know this is the only local theatre group where there is no lower age limit for youngsters – I‘m not talking stage schools here – so the cast of this production ranged from about age 5 through to adult.

The concept was good too, with mini versions of half a dozen shows rather than just a selection of songs. I couldn’t fault the choices – Hairspray, The Sound Of Music, The Wizard Of Oz, Annie, Shrek and Billy Elliot – although I did feel that the latter, good though it was, seemed a tad flat as a finale after the joyousness of the previous section, Shrek.

New book on activating care home gardens

Garden designers, Mark Rendell and Debbie Carroll, have written a book about the reasons why care home gardens for people with dementia are not being used more actively, particularly when they had been redesigned before. They believed that it was important to find out why as they wanted to make sure that the gardens they designed would be well-used spaces for the residents and staff alike.

Mark said, “It’s been an eye-opening journey and the findings from our research project were not at all what we expected to see. We set out to answer a simple question, "Why aren't care home gardens used more?" We’ve discovered that the care home’s culture, rather than the quality of the garden design, plays a key role in how well their residents use their outside spaces. We had to completely change the way we work as designers.”

RoadWise brings road safety to life at SafeWise

SafeWise, the award winning interactive safety education charity which runs LV=Streetwise in Bournemouth and the Weymouth Community Safety Centre, is breaking new ground as construction commences at the rear of the Weymouth centre on RoadWise - the UK’s first life-sized outdoor road safety village. RoadWise will provide a memorable safe, controlled opportunity for pedestrians, cyclists, new motorcyclists, younger and older drivers to practice skills for life - walking, riding and driving in a ‘real life’ environment. As a training environment it will help to drive down casualties on our roads, helping to deliver the sustainable changes in behaviour needed to make our roads safer.

Dorset Fire & Rescue Service has been a co-founder of both safety centres and now, Dorset Fire Authority and the Office of the Dorset Police & Crime Commissioner have laid down some funds to kick start the building, with the support of Dorset County Council. RoadWise will be built by main contractors and long term SafeWise charity supporters Morgan Sindall and charity founder supporters Siemens, SSE and Network Rail,
