Dates & Co at Plates & Co!

Hi everyone! I’m writing this blog post exactly 333 miles from my home in the seaside city of Bournemouth! I’ve travelled here with my other half to enjoy a romantic weekend and a much anticipated date night.

Date nights mean I get to combine two of my favourite things in the world – good food and even better company! They also tend to be a bit more relaxed when it comes to my SmartPoints choices.

Hotel du Vin Review

Bistro in Bournemouth

After a short walk through Poole’s old town, we reached the Hotel du Vin. A beautiful, ivy-clad Georgian mansion, the hotel looked elegant and inviting from the outside. As we entered the reception hall our eyes were automatically drawn to the wine glass chandelier above us, and the renaissance style painting that filled the entirety of the back wall. In short, the hotel’s interior epitomised taste and elegance.

The Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant in Westbourne

The Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant in Westbourne celebrates over 47 years of trading this year. In fact, if you are interested in local history, you may be interested to know that The Taj Mahal was the first Indian restaurant in Bournemouth!

The Taj Mahal is a family owned restaurant and is currently managed by Mohammed, who has worked his way up through the business. The restaurant offers the perfect place in which to go for a family meal or celebration and there is a strong emphasis on family - children are made very welcome. We've often thought about introducing our children to Indian cuisine and The Taj Mahal is the ideal venue.

Koh Thai Tapas

Koh Thai Tapas

For the last couple of years, I’ve driven past Koh Thai Tapas in Boscombe on a regular basis. It’s a restaurant I’ve always thought about going to but never got round to booking. Lots of friends have raved about Koh Thai Tapas so it was definitely somewhere that I was keen to visit.

And we finally got our chance, when we were approached to review the new Koh Thai Tapas restaurant in Bournemouth. Naturally, we jumped at the chance!

Samphire Restaurant, Christchurch

Samphire Restaurant, Christchurch

Samphire Restaurant is possibly one of Christchurch's best kept secrets. Samphire opened it's doors in 2011 and has been serving up delicious, mouth-watering delights ever since!

Samphire's owners, Mike and Chris were kind enough to invite us down to try out their delicious menu. Following a contemporary and European theme throughout, Mike and Chris try to only use local produce wherever possible including locally caught fish and shellfish, locally sourced meat and seasonal produce. All bread is freshly baked on site and the desserts are all freshly created on the premises each day.

I ventured down to Samphire one Thursday evening with my boyfriend. Although it was quiet, the atmosphere was still intimate thanks to the sweet sounds of an acoustic guitarist who plays there on a weekly basis.

Urban Reef sign

Urban Reef

On a dark cold winter's night in January, we headed down to The Overstrand at Boscombe promenade. Twinkling lights in the distance led us to the doors of Urban Reef restaurant. As we headed up the first floor stairs, the modern twist on the rustic beach style décor complimented the seaside surroundings perfectly. We were greeted by our waiter, an open log burning fire and live music!

Norfolk Royale Hotel, Bournemouth

The Perfect Lunch

Lunch at one of Bournemouth's finest and most well known hotels, The Norfolk Royale is a lovely treat for anyone.

The Norfolk Royale Hotel is one of the grandest buildings in Bournemouth's town centre. Its four-star rating makes it also one of Bournemouth's finest hotels.

As you walk in to the hotel you are welcomed by the grandeur of Edwardian times gone past. Relax in the lounge area with afternoon tea on the comfy sofas or venture into Echo's Restaurant to sample its fine and varied menu. The staff are welcoming and attentive to ensure that your visit is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.

Here at, we were invited down to review the 45-minute, 2-course business lunch which runs Monday to Friday from Noon until 2pm in Echo's Restaurant. Echo's is very light and airy. The decor has a sophisticated yet Edwardian twist to it and it is the perfect place for a business lunch or to relax with friends.

Tiien Thai Restaurant

A magical adventure of Thai Cuisine...

Tiien Restaurant, opened recently, has already attracted the attention of Thai food lovers, making it the place to go for an authentic Thai cuisine experience.

The beautiful entrance and friendly staff offer you a traditional, warm welcome to a wonderful experience, where you will find everything you need for a fantastic Thai meal, followed by a couple of drinks in the attractive lounge bar with an exclusive decor that takes your imagination on a journey into the heart of Thai culture.

Da Vinci's, Poole Quay

Da Vinci's, Poole Quay

One wet and rainy night in January, we were invited to Da Vinci’s Italian Restaurant on Poole Quay to write a review for Bournemouthtown.

With the rain pouring down and the wind souring, stepping outside was not really at the top of my list. However we battled through the elements and we were extremely pleased that we made the effort!

Vinncenzo, co owner of Da Vinci's greeted us with a warmth that is usually kept for close friends and relatives. We instantly felt at home. The checked table cloths and traditional rustic surroundings add to the atmosphere and really make you feel like you are in a traditional Italian Restaurant!

The Beehive, Canford Cliffs

The Beehive, Canford Cliffs

Wow - that was our first impression as we walked in to the new Beehive earlier today.

The Beehive Inn, Canford Village is one of the area’s best kept secrets. A beautifully restored bar, restaurant and hotel, offering a relaxed and comfortable dining area for both locals and guests. Style wise, I would say a good mix of contemporary and colonial with a dollop of home comforts. The Beehive has eight bedrooms. We managed to have a sneaky look at all eight rooms and they are absolutely stunning. With every room having it's own identity, the colour schemes and soft furnishings running throughout all eight rooms are outstanding and to a standard that you would usually associate with a 4 / 5 star hotel.
