Young Programmers

Provide the Perfect Study Break at Lighthouse

Conceived as a welcome distraction from exam revision blues, The Study Break at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, Friday 20th May was produced and managed entirely by young people.

The successful event more than delivered on its early promise and gave some 200 young live music fans plenty to cheer about.

Headlined by emerging Americana outfit New Desert Blues and featuring sibling trio Emmay and acoustic duo Ben & Maddie, the show was programmed, promoted, equipped and staged as the culmination of a series of four-month courses that make up Young Programmers, a key element of Lighthouse’s learning and participation programme.

“The Study Break was crafted by young programmers and young technicians for a young audience, proving that (we) are capable, full of surprises and willing to think outside of the box,” says participant Lucy Turner.

Aimed at young people aged 16-plus, artists and all others interested in gaining creative industry experience, Young Programmers offers the opportunity for training and learning in areas such as programming, technical work, writing and reviewing.

“I've enjoyed this course a lot, it was a unique and fulfilling experience that you don’t get in many other places,”
added young technician Hamish.

Having been over-subscribed for the first intake in January, there are plans to recruit a new intake to start in November and potential participants are invited to register their interest by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

“Lighthouse is committed to providing real world learning opportunities that inspire the next generation to experience every aspect of the arts, whether on-stage, back-stage or front of house,” says Sara St George, Head of Sales and Marketing for Lighthouse. “The young people in the first intake of Young Programmers courses were incredibly impressive and the success of The Study Break is a genuine achievement.”
