Hardy Monument Abseil Raises over £5,000 for Disability Char

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, recently held its annual abseil challenge at the Hardy Monument in Dorchester, thanks to the kind permission of The National Trust. The event raised £5,346 which will help the charity to continuing providing vital support to children and adults with disabilities across the county.

On Saturday June 18th ninety four runners lit up the night between Boscombe Sea Front and Southbourne’s Fishermans Walk to raise money for Dorset Blind Association; a local charity supporting the needs of the blind and visually impaired in order to help them live happier and healthier lives.

Julian Fellowes, Brian Blessed, Sir Tom Stoppard and rock band The Vamps are among famous names posing for ‘mugshots’ in support of the Julia’s House Time For Tea campaign this summer.

The stars join Julia’s House Patrons, Jasper Conran, Eddie Howe, Harry Redknapp, Debra Stephenson, Minette Walters and Chris Jarvis as they rally behind the children’s hospice charity’s annual tea party fundraiser.


Gangsta Grannies Get into the Swim of Things

Two local ladies, who dub themselves the Gangsta Grannies, are undertaking a mammoth challenge in August to swim the English Channel to France and back to help BCHA support local vulnerable women and children.

Taking their nickname from David Walliams’ best-selling children’s book, 58 year old Ali Budynkiewicz and 48 year old Lisa North, two grandmothers from Dorset, will be swimming in relay, taking it in turns with two hour shifts, from Dover to France and back again between August 26th – 31st, swimming on the best tide and conditions decided by their pilot Paul Foreman on his boat Optimist. This endurance challenge has never been done by two women before, let alone two grannies.


Cycle Diaries Raise Funds For Macmillan Caring Locally

Susan Hausberger has written a book detailing her cycle from Tyrol, Austria, to Christchurch in aid of the Macmillan Unit which cared for her terminally ill father.

In 2010, Susan Hausberger undertook a 1400km cycle ride from the Austrian Tyrol to Christchurch in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally, a charity which looked after her father during his fight with cancer. Susan, who is a grandmother of four has now written a book about her experiences, detailing the ups and downs of her journey across Europe.

Jenny Takes on New Heights for Diverse Abilities

Diverse Abilities Communications Manager, Jenny Pearce, is climbing new heights by taking on the world’s second tallest mountain Kilimanjaro in February 2017 to raise over £4,000 for the charity that supports children and adults with disabilities in Dorset.

Jenny is taking on the challenge of climbing the 5,895m mountain, walking the Lemosho route over seven days.

Hundreds walk at Twilight

Around 300 people took to Bournemouth seafront on the evening of Friday 20th May to help raise funds for medical equipment that will change the lives of hundreds of women at Bournemouth Hospital Charity’s Twilight Walk for Women.

Patients, their families and staff joined together to raise money for Botox treatment that will benefit ladies with an overactive bladder and Myosure equipment that will benefit women undergoing investigations into post-menopausal bleeding, which can be an early sign of cancer of the womb are top of the wish list.

Diverse Abilities' Caterpillar Club at Langside School

Diverse Abilities, has launched the Caterpillar Club for parents and children with disabilities plus their siblings. The Caterpillar Club runs every Monday morning at Langside School (Langside Avenue, Poole) from 10am –11.30am and gives the opportunity for parents and pre-school children to attend a free, fun and friendly session each week. The children can take part in various activities including music, art, playing with sensory toys and an interactive smart board touch screen.


Take on Diverse Abilities Ultra-Marathon Trek

Join Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, and take on an exciting ultra-marathon two-day trek along the Jurassic Coast this summer (16-17 July) and make a difference to children and adults, and their families, with disabilities in the county.

This is an amazing opportunity for the adventurous or those that simply love walking. The challenge will see you trekking approximately 60km over a two-day period starting off in Weymouth and finishing at Studland Bay, all while taking in some fantastic sights along the way.

Lawrence Moves into New Pad Thanks to Diverse Abilities

Lawrence, 56, has been supported by Diverse Abilities for over 40 years and recently moved into his own home in Poole thanks to the support of the Dorset disability charity.

Known as the gentle giant, Lawrence has cerebral palsy and the charity’s supported living team provide the care he requires while giving him the opportunity to make his own choices and live as independently as possible.


Bowls Club Raises £1155 for Macmillan Caring Locally

Macmillan Caring Locally charity has received a generous £1155 donation from the East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club.

Dedicated charity fundraisers at the East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club have presented a cheque of £1155 to Macmillan Caring Locally, a charity which provides specialist palliative care for cancer patients in South East Dorset and South West Hampshire. The current President of the East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club, Janet Barteluk selected Macmillan Caring Locally because of the strong connection the charity shares with many club members, either directly or through friends and families.
