What’s happening to our Post Offices? Their services are important to us and essential to local businesses. Indeed, they are part of our local communities.

It was a worry a few years ago when the large post office and royal mail depot in the centre of Christchurch was sold off for property redevelopment.

The post office, however, moved seamlessly into alternative premises nearby and the service continued uninterrupted- until April. The shock overnight closure of the Christchurch post office caused consternation and upset to both individuals and local businesses alike.

The recent announcement that the owner of the Highcliffe Post Office is now going to close his post office is a further major shock.

What is happening to these stalwarts of our high street? To understand, we need to go back to 2012 when Post Offices Ltd was spolit off as a separate entity from the Royal Mail prior to its privatisation. Our post offices are no linger government owned or subsidized. Our post offices are no longer government owned or subsidized and are now privately owned shops with a franchise to offer post office services. Those services are reducing in volume and poorly remunerated and many post offices are struggling.

The owner of the Christchurch Post Office said she had worked hard but had been unable to make the business cover its overheads. The Highcliffe post master has explained that after much soul searching, with his lease ending, he cannot see it is financially viable to move the business to new premises and he has no alternative but to close his doors.

Despite assurances by Post Office Limited that new owners will be found, I fear it is a sad and unpalatable truth that, like Woolworths, a time may come when post offices are no longer a presence on our High Streets.
