At long last, a Christchurch development is taking place...

Eight years after Aldi’s first application in 2008 for development at the top of Somerford (now called Meteor Park), not only has the work started but it is proceeding at a cracking pace. Indeed it will not be long before the keys to the site are handed over to the retailers.

Only a few years ago we were reeling from numerous supermarket planning application. The site at the back of Barrrack Road was the first to get permission for an Asda store- but the site still remains empty. Next Beagles’ application for the building of a Morrisons finally got the go ahead after appeal- but again there is no sign of any development taking place.

However, at long last, east Christchurch is getting its development. By the autumn fitting should be completed, staff recruitment will have taken place and the stores should be opening by Christmas.

As wel as Aldi, clothing and footwear will be supplied by Matalan, TK Maxx and Sports Direct. The plan is to stop us all going off to Castlepoint and to keep a bigger chunk of our spending here in Christchurch.

The worry is the effect it will have on our town centre. With free parking it is bound to attract some shoppers away from the high street. Poundland is also opening a branch at Meteor Park which raises the question as to whether they will still keep on the store that they recently took over in the town centre.

The proposed takeover of Argos by Sainsburys also makes one wonder what the long term future of that store be and whether it may make the move to Sainsburys in east Christchurch in due course.

The development at Meteor Park is going to be good for Somerford, but unsettling for the town centre.
